Overview

Kitane are feline humanoids — lithe, sharp-eyed, and quick — with short fur in sand, dusk, and smoke colorations, expressive tails, and slitted eyes adapted to desert glare and desert dark alike. They famously move as though the heat cannot touch them, because, mostly, it cannot.

Racial Trait

Lucky — Whenever you roll a 1 on an Attack Roll or Skill Check, you can reroll it once.

History

The Kitane first walked in Zanastar at the beginning of the world and, alone among the twelve first races, never truly settled. During The Age of Colonization they split into a number of prides and took up the wandering life they keep to this day — ranging the deserts of Sinovanya and spreading through the surrounding regions. The prides' Accord of Wells with the settled kingdom of Sinovanya, guaranteeing water rights in exchange for safe caravans, is among the oldest continuously honored treaties in the world.

Culture

A Kitane's pride is their nation, their family, and their address. Each pride keeps a fixed desert range, a memorized well-map, and an oral history recited on watch through the night. Honor among Kitane is a practical matter: your word is your water, and a Kitane who breaks an oath is said to "drink alone" — the worst thing one can be.

Current Day

Most Kitane still travel with their prides, but "far-walkers" — those who leave to wander the wider world for a decade or a lifetime — are an honored tradition, and Kitane caravan guards, guides, and scouts are prized on every continent. Every far-walker carries a pouch of Zanastar sand, to be spilled on their grave if they die abroad.
