Overview
Necroshard is not a truly natural type of crystal, but rather a crystal formed through an alchemical process known as Stone-turning. Unlike the other seven resonance crystals, which form through geological or environmental processes, Necroshard is manufactured — a corrupted version of Verdathyst that has been alchemically inverted to channel decay rather than life.
Stone-turning
The process of Stone-turning involves corrupting Verdathyst crystals into Necroshard through carefully controlled alchemical means. It was discovered by an elven scientist named Gambrard Tirsilyn, whose original motivations and the full details of the process remain a subject of significant scholarly debate — as well as considerable secrecy among those who still practice it.
The corruption process fundamentally inverts the crystal's resonance, transforming Verdathyst's life-affirming properties into an affinity for entropy and decay.
Legal Status
Stone-turning and Necroshard ownership and usage are outlawed in many kingdoms across Ardelûn. The combination of its unnatural origin, its association with decay, and the danger of misuse has led most governing bodies to treat Necroshard as a controlled or prohibited substance. Those found in possession of it in restricted regions face severe legal penalties.
Despite this, a black market for Necroshard persists, particularly among those who study forbidden alchemy or seek its power for purposes that sanctioned crystal use cannot provide.
