Pyrothyst

Pyrothyst crystals command fire and heat. Found in the volcanoes and mountains of Ardelûn, they burn with an inner fire that never quenches — and the strongest specimens will burn bare skin on contact.

Overview

Pyrothyst crystals have a measure of control over fire and heat. They are primarily found in the many volcanoes and mountains of Ardelûn — some of which are still occasionally active, making it a dangerous undertaking to attempt a harvest. Pyrothyst is typically a deep reddish orange colour and often contains a fiery, cracked internal structure where the heat from inside the crystal seems to escape but never quench.

They are warm to the touch at all times, and the stronger Pyrothyst crystals can burn bare skin upon contact. Harvesters working with high-grade specimens typically use insulated gloves and specialised tools.

Applications

Pyrothyst is among the most widely used resonance crystals in Ardelûn, owing to the universal demand for heat and light.

  • Great Forges — Pyrothyst crystals can sustain a forge fire indefinitely without requiring wood or fuel, making them invaluable to smiths, artificers, and industrial workshops.
  • Heat Generators — Stronger crystals are used in generator-type devices that convert the crystal's heat into mechanical motion for primitive automated devices.
  • Street Lamps — In New Aerilon in the kingdom of Raetia, tiny fragments of Pyrothyst are used as the light source for public street lamps throughout the city.
