Cryolite

Born in the heart of ancient glaciers in Naporia, Cryolite crystals hold dominion over water and ice — and are the most brittle and difficult to handle of all the resonance crystals.

Overview

Cryolite crystals have water and ice based powers. They are born in the heart of ancient glaciers in Naporia, from the slow compression and freezing of water mixed with the unique polar minerals of the region. As such, they appear a very pale white colour with sharp, jagged edges and hints of aqua blue and green when reflecting light.

Properties & Handling

Cryolite is the most brittle of all the resonance crystals. Because of this, when a specimen is found it is typically kept in whatever form it was discovered in — attempting to cut or shape it risks breaking the crystal and rendering it significantly less useful.

Stronger Cryolite crystals can also be very cold to the touch, making it impossible to carry bare-handed. Weaker specimens have roughly the same coldness as an ice cube. Specialised insulated containers are commonly used by harvesters and traders dealing in high-grade Cryolite.

Due to the dangerous conditions of their formation sites and their inherent brittleness, Cryolite crystals have seen less widespread adoption in technology and infrastructure compared to more workable crystals like Pyrothyst or Aerolite.

Applications

Despite the challenges involved in working with Cryolite, its unique properties have been put to use in several notable ways.

  • Cold Storage — Some wealthy residences maintain Cryolite-powered cold storage units, allowing food and perishables to be preserved without ice harvesting.
  • The Stormshield Dam — One of the most notable pieces of architecture in Ardelûn to leverage Cryolite power. Located in the farming city of Dorian, the dam uses Cryolite's water-based properties to hold back the Serpent's Coil River and redirect its flow into irrigation systems, watering crops without reliance on rainfall.
